fix: make image modal keyboard accessible and manage focus - #1274
This PR makes Markdown images and the lightbox modal fully keyboard-accessible and WCAG-compliant:
Accessible Trigger: Wraps Markdown images in a native <button type="button" class="md__image-trigger"> with aria-label="Expand image{{ with $alt }}: {{ . }}{{ end }}", bringing native keyboard focus and Enter/Space activation.
Focus Ring Sizing: Styled .md__image-trigger with width: fit-content; max-width: 100%; margin: 0 auto; and a visible :focus-visible outline so focus indicators snugly wrap the image boundaries.
Focus Management:
Moves focus to the close button upon opening the modal.
Traps Tab and Shift+Tab focus within the modal dialog while open.
Restores focus to the triggering element (or raw image fallback) upon modal close.
Closes on Escape key and background overlay click.
Valid HTML Nesting: On DOMContentLoaded, unwraps any .md__image-trigger nested inside anchor links (<a>) so interactive elements are not nested inside links, and marks linked images with data-modal="false" so clicking them navigates the link.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Images can be opened in a modal using an accessible button, with keyboard navigation and Escape-to-close support.
The modal moves focus to its close button when opened and returns focus to the trigger when closed.
Supported images are displayed in an optimized format when available, with the original image as a fallback.
Bug Fixes
Clicking the modal backdrop closes it, while clicks inside the displayed image area no longer do.
Images that link to other content remain usable as links rather than opening the modal.

Walkthrough
Markdown image rendering adds button triggers and limits WebP processing to non-SVG image resources. The modal adds dialog semantics, focus management, keyboard handling, and updated trigger behavior.

Summary
Render and style image triggers layouts/_default/_markup/render-image.html, assets/scss/_image-modal_project.scss
Image rendering adds modal-trigger buttons for resolved and fallback images. WebP processing applies only to non-SVG image resources. Styles position the trigger over the image and show focus outlines.
Open, close, and manage modal focus layouts/partials/image-modal.html
The modal declares dialog semantics. openModal resolves image targets, sets the preview source and alt text, and focuses the close button. closeModal clears the preview and restores focus when possible.
Wire triggers and keyboard interaction layouts/partials/image-modal.html, assets/scss/_image-modal_project.scss
Tab and Shift+Tab remain within the open modal, and Escape closes it. Trigger setup excludes linked images from modal handling. Only clicks on the overlay itself close the modal. The close button receives a focus outline.

Nice work on this. The native <button> wrapper is the right shape for #1258, the image keeps its own role and alt, and the focus management (move to close, trap Tab, restore to trigger) all reads correctly. CI is green.
disabled on the trigger breaks linked images until JS runs.
For an image wrapped in a link, [](url), the served markup is <a><button disabled><img></a>. A disabled button swallows clicks from its entire subtree, so the anchor never fires. I checked this in Chrome with the exact markup from this PR:
with disabled: clicking the image did nothing, no navigation, and a document-level click listener did not fire either
the same markup without disabled: clicking the image navigated normally
So linked images are unclickable until DOMContentLoaded finishes unwrapping them, and stay unclickable with JS off. This pattern is used in content today, for example the diagram in the Kubernetes request flow tutorial.
Dropping disabled resolves it, since an enabled button inside an anchor still lets the click reach the link. The tradeoff is that without JS the buttons stay tab stops that do nothing, which seems like the smaller cost compared to a dead link.
Smaller points
The description says WebP processing is guarded with reflect.IsImageResourceProcessable, but there is no such guard in the diff or in the head version of the file. The existing extension check already limits processing to png/jpg/jpeg, so this may be a leftover from an earlier iteration.
image-modal.html still ends without a trailing newline.
The preview for this PR was pruned by the retention job, so there is nothing to eyeball right now. A fresh push regenerates it.
Behaviour change worth noting for others reading: raw images inside links no longer get a modal handler. Previously both happened and navigation won anyway, so the visible result is the same.

This disabled is the one I verified in the browser: with it, a click anywhere on an image wrapped in a Markdown link never reaches the anchor, because a disabled button swallows events from its subtree. Without it, the same markup navigates fine. Suggest rendering the button enabled and letting the DOMContentLoaded unwrap handle the nested-interactive case as it already does.

This chain can collapse to modalTrigger = trigger || image;. The image.closest(".md__image-trigger") branch re-derives what trigger already holds, and the document.activeElement fallback is unreachable because the guard above guarantees image is non-null by this point.

With display: block; width: 100%, the focus ring spans the full column rather than the image for any image narrower than its container. Worth a look once a preview exists.
@leecalcote a question for this, separate from the review.
#1258 raised whether every Markdown image should be expandable, or only ones marked for it. This PR makes all ~380 of them keyboard-focusable, so each image becomes a tab stop. On pages carrying 20 or more images that is a real cost for keyboard and screen reader users to tab past.
Do you want all images expandable, or should it be opt-in (say a title or class on the ones worth zooming)? Happy either way, just want it to be a deliberate call rather than a side effect.
- Wrap Markdown images in native button triggers (.md__image-trigger) with aria-label
- Unwrap triggers inside anchor links on DOMContentLoaded to maintain valid HTML
- Size triggers with width: fit-content so focus rings snugly wrap images
- Add focus trap and Escape key listener within modal dialog
- Move focus to close button when modal opens and restore focus to trigger on close
- Add fallback focus restoration for raw content images
- Add focus-visible indicator styling for trigger and close buttons

Thanks @hiyach28 for catching that with the disabled button and testing it out!
I've pushed an update with all of these addressed:
Dropped disabled from the buttons so linked images aren't blocked from navigating before JS runs.
Simplified the modalTrigger fallback to trigger || image.
Switched .md__image-trigger to width: fit-content with margin: 0 auto so the focus ring now hugs the image neatly instead of spanning the entire column.
Fixed the missing newline at the end of the file and updated the PR description.
The push should kick off a fresh preview build as well. Let me know if everything looks good on your end!
Update on next steps for this PR — of the two PRs addressing #1258, this is the one being taken forward; the duplicate (#1260) has been closed.
Two things are needed before this can merge:
CodeRabbit's major comment (Oct 15) is still open. Both branches place the <img> inside a <button>, and button descendants are presentational in the accessibility tree — so screen-reader users can't find the image as an image until they open the preview, which cuts against this PR's goal of retaining the image's role. Please either restructure as suggested (image beside its button trigger, modal lookup updated to match) or reply on that thread with why the current structure is acceptable.
One idea worth porting from fix: make image modal keyboard accessible #1260: it guards WebP processing in render-image.html with reflect.IsImageResourceProcessable. This PR doesn't have that guard; adding it would make the render hook safer for non-processable images.
There's also an open scope question for @leecalcote: should every content image become expandable, or only ones explicitly marked? A decision there may shape the final implementation, so it's worth resolving alongside the restructure. No rush — reply here when you've had a chance to look.
Thanks for the detailed feedback and for prioritizing this PR! I've pushed an update in commit 3ae43ca addressing both points:
Preserve Image Role (CodeRabbit finding): Restructured render-image.html so the <img> and the .md__image-trigger button are siblings within .md__image. Screen readers now encounter the native image directly with its proper role and alt text preserved. The button serves as an accessible keyboard trigger overlay with :focus-visible styling, and modal lookup/focus restoration has been updated to coordinate across the sibling relationship.
WebP Guard: Added the reflect.IsImageResourceProcessable check prior to calling .Process "webp q85" to safeguard against non-processable image formats.
Regarding the scope question for @leecalcote: Happy to adapt the trigger to be opt-in (via class/title) if preferred, or keep it as-is.
