fix(watcher): resubscribe after native errors - #2500
Any error delivered through the native subscription callback switches the watch to snapshot polling for the rest of the session. These errors mean events were lost, not that the watcher is unusable:
macOS FSEvents reports "Events were dropped … must be re-scanned" during large bursts of file changes, and keeps the stream running.
On Windows a buffer overflow, and on Linux an inotify failure, tear the subscription down. A new subscription works.
Snapshot polling is the expensive path. On macOS, getEventsSince replays FSEvents history for the whole watch root under a backend-wide lock. In @parcel/watcher 2.6.0 each call also leaks its native watcher and event list: the FSEvents stream context has no release callback. We reproduced the leak with the shipped binary. The workspace panel also keeps showing the degraded-mode banner.
Change
On a callback error, unsubscribe, subscribe again, then emit overflow so consumers rescan.
Fall back to snapshot polling only when resubscribing fails.
Give each subscription a generation. Callbacks from a retired subscription are ignored, so repeated errors trigger one recovery. An error from the replacement before subscribe() resolves fails the attempt and falls back, instead of reporting a dead subscription as healthy.
Behavior changes
After dropped events the watch stays native: one full refresh, no banner. Before: the degraded banner and 5 s polling until the workspace was reopened.
During a sustained burst the watcher may resubscribe several times. Each costs one subscribe and one debounced full refresh. This is not throttled; the cost is bounded by the burst.
Not in scope
The native leak itself. The binary is prebuilt, so patching it means building @parcel/watcher for every platform. This PR keeps normal operation off the leaking path.
Verification
Tests: a callback error resubscribes and emits overflow without snapshots (fails on dev); repeated errors recover once; a failed resubscribe, or an error from the replacement before subscribe() resolves, falls back to snapshot polling.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The file watcher host tracks native subscription generations and ignores callbacks from retired subscriptions. After callback errors, it attempts resubscription and enqueues a root-path overflow event. If replacement setup fails, it falls back to snapshot polling.
The host tracks subscription generations and ignores callbacks from retired subscriptions. If an error arrives before setup completes, it unsubscribes and rejects the attempt. Tests cover errors during replacement setup.

Resubscribing before falling back is the right recovery path. One race can leave the watcher permanently silent while it reports healthy: the guard also drops errors from the replacement subscription while its subscribe promise is pending. I reproduced that callback ordering in the watcher host test harness.
A native callback error means events were lost, not that the watcher
is unusable. FSEvents keeps running after dropping events, and other
backends can be restarted. Resubscribe and request a full rescan
instead of switching to snapshot polling for the rest of the session.
Snapshot polling is now used only when subscribing fails.
The recovering flag also dropped errors from the replacement
subscription while its subscribe promise was pending. A fatal error
there left a dead subscription reported as healthy.
Track a generation per subscription: callbacks from a retired one are
ignored, and an error from the new one before subscribe resolves fails
the attempt and falls back to snapshot polling.
